VXR8 Standard Exhaust

Basically a 57mm (2 1/4") system......well almost........there are area's of concern !

Mid box, resonated, probably a "X" inside by default due to baffles, very tinny hollow sounding box,

with horrendous exit pipes over the crossmember ( 57mm system ...my ass !!) into what look like mini

straight through silencers.

Rear boxes quite large, again hollow and tinny sounding, resonated ??

Phase 1 mods

I don't like the std trims, machined aluminium, which has corroded in no time at all.

I made some clamp on trims to replace these, not as straight forward as I'd hoped. The reduced clamp

on tube needed to be eccentrically welded to the 3" trim as there was not a big enough distance between

centres to allow the 3" trims (std trims are 69.5mm) to fit without touching each other and I wanted a small

gap to separate them.

Functional slash cut to match the OE trim end angles.

Eventually I want to replace the wholes system with a 2 1/2" cat back. Will most likely have the same

number of silencers, but straight through, finishing with the same style "functional" trims.

Right, I like these trims, had them on a few weeks now, so time for phase 2,......some rear exhaust boxes.

OE exhaust box is huge!, very hollow and tinny, my car has done just 6k miles, look how rusty these

things are already !!

Pre-formed rolled silencer boxes (straight through, non resonated), best in the industry apparently !

Must admit they look really nice and have a quality feel to them. Ribbed wrappers have no flex !

Bit of polishing before final welding of the tail pipes, then lastly the hangers to position. At the moment

this sits in a jig made using the OE box as master for position of bolt flange, but more importantly positioning

the tail trims. Trims are as before, plain slash cut 3" diameter. All fully tig welded

Something for later on, a full form kiss x-pipe, in other words, each side maintains full bore size

from the 2 1/2" tubing. Many other x-pipe designs around, most after market exhausts seem to

favour kiss type, but have sacrificed cross sectional area at that point. This was designed to keep

gas flow as straight as possible, but still allowing each exhaust bank to mix, also allowing easy install

with room for welding at each end. A bit undecided about whether to build this into a mid box, or

omit the mid box altogether and just have twin 4" silencers a bit further down, ie same position as

what appear to be small silencers in the OE system.
