Head off

Now the interesting pictures, the head gasket !
Typically no6 has suffered the most with the main coolant aperture a few mm away from the metal
sealing ring.

This picture shows the ring which has laminated and split along the length of the arrow. Circled is where
I think there has been a very small path where coolant had been seeping. The engine while it was
running showed no signs of any problems ! Coolant can leak and damage the cylinder bores and piston
rings for a long time before real failure occurs. I really wanted to avoid this and am now very happy about
deciding to tackle this job now.

Slightly better close up.

View from other side of gasket.

All of the areas of gasket that designed to partially block coolant from flowing from block to head showed
severe signs of corrosion, some of these areas were stuck to the block and some had just crumbled
away. In time all of this material would have become loose, then coolant would not have flowed properly,
causing hot spots and problems with the back of the head, ie no5 and no6.
