- Charge cooler Impeller replacement
- Normal service interval for the impeller is
18K miles, apparently changed to 9k miles
- I prefer to drain down the cooling system
completely from the bottom hose to rad and
- from the hose connection to the impeller.
- The impeller is housed beneath this
cover secured by 3 M6 bolts.
-
-
- Remove the cover to reveal the impeller.
-
- Using long nosed pliers simply pull out the
impeller.
-
-
- New and old impeller, actually the old
impeller is quite serviceable, but since I have a replacement,
- it gets replaced anyway.
Housing removed.
- In the bottom of the impeller housing is a
seal to stop coolant leaking into the crank case, it is
- important to replace this aswell. Undo the
jubilee on the other side of the housing, the housing will
- lift up over the shaft and pull away from the
hose.
-
- The seal fits one way up only ! There have
been instances where the seal has fallen out of the
- housing, I used a centre punch to make small
dots around the inside diameter that the seal fits into,
- this will help grip the outer rubber surface of the seal.
-
- The old seal was prized out with a screwdriver
and a new one pressed in with a drill press to keep
- it all square.
-
-
-
- Re-assemble the housing and carefully insert
the impeller, the rotation is clockwise.
- A thin smear of black sealant and the cover
can go back on.
There are 2 short, formed hoses which connect at the back of the charge
cooler, these had seen better
days one joint was leaking. A 3rd hose runs over the top of the cam cover
from a steel pipe and into
another steel pipe the other side of the cover. Some 16mm diameter silicone
hose reinforced with
spiral wire were used to replace these. www.viper-performance.co.uk

Be careful when removing the charge cooler not to damage the electrical
connectors, 1 earth (shown in
stupid position!) and the spade terminal for level sensor.
